Summary

Cusco – Machu Picchu by train

The train from Cusco is the easiest and fastest way to arrive in Aguas Calientes. Peru Rail and Inca Rail currently offer two different services to Machu Picchu (Vistadome or Expedition) that can depart from either Poroy or Ollantaytambo.

Once you finish your 2 hour walking tour of Machu Picchu, you will climb Huayna Picchu Mountain starting at 10:00 a.m.

We highly recommend that you book your tour far in advance because during the peak season (May to September) train tickets can be sold out several weeks in advance.

Itinerary

We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco early at 5:00 a.m. and drive you in our private van for 1 1/2 hours to Ollantaytambo train station where you will board the 7:10 a.m. train. The 7:10 a.m. train will arrive in Aguas Calientes train station at 8:40 a.m. where you will be picked up by your transfer outside of the train station. The transfer will be holding a sign with your name on it so that there will be no confusion. If you do not see the transfer initially, just wait for them outside of the train station. Once the transfer has picked you up, he will take you the bus station where you will catch a 20 minute bus to the entrance of Machu Picchu.

Once in Machu Picchu, you will have a 2 hour guided tour of the ancient city. After this tour  you will have free time to continue your own exploration of the ancient city.

RETURNING TRAIN: The most common departure time that we suggest for our tourists is the 6:20 p.m. train. This departure time will allow you to spend more time at Machu Picchu and do more activities like hiking to the Sun Gate while still having time to enjoy the hot springs or some cervezas in Aguas Calientes after your tour.

The 6:20.p.m. train will arrive in Ollantaytambo train station at 8:00 p.m. where you will be picked up by your driver outside of the train station. The driver will be holding a sign with your name on it so that there will be no confusion. If you do not see the driver initially, just wait for them outside of the train station. Once the driver has picked you up, you will travel for 1 1/2 hours in a van before you arrive back at your hotel/hostel. Your arrival time in Cusco will be approximately 10:00 p.m.

However we can also book an afternoon train departure time of 2:55 or 4:12.p.m. for you if you prefer, at an extra cost of US $25. The train we will book depends on availability and will be confirmed at your briefing. There is also an option to upgrade your train to the Vistadome train which is an extra US $65 per person.

Please let us know your departure preference at the time of booking your tour with us!
